NSW: Investigation launched after police dog bites missing man

An investigation has been launched after a police brutally bit a man on the Central Coast of NSW overnight.

The violent struggle between a man, 27 – who was reported missing to authorities on Friday – and a police dog happened at Tuggerah Lakes, located an hour south of Newcastle, at 10pm on Saturday night.

The man was rushed to John Hunter Hospital with serious leg wounds where he remains in a critical condition under police guard.

Police launched an operation with the dog unit and highway patrol to find the missing man after he was allegedly seen running in the southbound lanes of the M1 at Bushells Ridge by motorists at 6pm on Saturday.

A truck driver, 59, alleged to police that the man was struck by his vehicle’s mirror after he swerxjmtzywved to avoid him.

Following the incident, the 27-year-old allegedly ran into the surrounding bushland before he was located by a police officer.

The male sergeant who found the man also sustained minor injuries to his face during the arrest and was taken to Wyong hospital for treatment. He has since been released.

A crime scene was established with a team from Brisbane Water Police District to investigate the details of the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review.
