Man dies after car submerged in southwest Sydney floodwaters

A man has died after becoming trapped in floodwaters in the southwest Sydney suburb of Cobbitty.

Just before 8am on Friday, police officers discovered the man's body inside a car submerged in floodwaters.

Cobbitty, near Camden, is nestled on the Nepean River, which broke its banks on Thursday afternoon.

At least five people have already xjmtzywbeen rescued by State Emergency Service boats in Camden.

The Nepean River is forecast to exceed record flood levels from April 1988, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

A police operation is under way to retrieve the body from the car.
