Major development in Stuart MacGill kidnapping case

The brother of Stuart MacGill’s partner has been committed to stand trial over the alleged kidnapping of the former Test spinner.

Marino Sotiropoulos is facing a string of charges after Mr MacGill was allegedly snatched from outside his home on Sydney’s lower north shore last year.

Mr Sotiropoulos, the brother of Mr MacGill’s partner Maria O’Meagher, appeared in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday where he was committed to stand trial.

Prosecutors dropped one charge of participating in a criminal group.

But he is still charged with take/detain in company with intention to get an advantage, supplying a prohibited drug and stalk/intimidate intending to cause fear/physical harm.

He will appear in the District Court next month when he is set to be arraigned and enter a plea.

Mr MacGill was in April last year allegedly taken to a Bringelly property in Sydney’s southwest where he was assaulted, threatened with a gun and demands were made for money.

He was held for an hour before being driven to Belmore, in southwestern Sydney, where he was released.

Mr Sotiropoulos is one of six men who has been arrested over the alleged plot.

Police have said that Mr MacGill was not involved in any illegal activity and that he was “purely” a victim.

The court has previously heard that Mr Sotiropoulos has denied being involved in kidnapping the spinner from outside his Cremornexjmtzyw home.
